Tourists swarming midtown Manhattan this December will find many lively sights, despite the frosty weather, so breathe deep and inhale the cheer. There’s lots to see and do, just bundle up! New Yorkers are out in droves eager to see what’s different this year. There are old favorites and there’s always something new, so check out Time Out NY for a full listing of what’s available and where to get tickets.

Here are a few suggestions for those of you in the spirit:

  1. The Nutcracker Ballet – Every year this stellar company puts on a show that is sure to please kids and adults alike. While George Balanchine’s choreography of the New York City Ballet may be the most famous at Lincoln Center, the iconic show comes in all shapes and sizes.
  1. Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall – Every year this holiday show is a crowd pleaser. The Rockettes are as exciting as ever, and the venue is one not to be missed. There’s the dazzling snow scene, sure to delight every child, as well as an inspirational nativity so grab your hat and go!
  1. Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree — There’s always the big surprise of how big and tall the immense and sparkling pine will be and this year so make sure you make a stop at the promenade at 48th Street and Fifth Avenue, to see this sparkling wonder. Bring your skates and take some spins around the rink, or rent them, and glide around under the stars. Afterwards, enjoy a hot chocolate or hot toddy.
  1. Department Store Window Elaborate Displays – If you start at 34th street you’ll stop Macy’s where Santa is decked out for the holidays, based on the classic film, Miracle at 34th And right across from Rock Center is Saks, always a favorite among children. Saks’ three-dimensional, musical, animated exhibits of Sleep Beauty mechanical dolls is sure to delight all. Visitors make the story’s characters come alive touching controls on the window.
  1. Baroque Christmas Tree at the Metropolitan Museum of Art — The Museum continues its holiday tradition this favorite of New Yorkers and visitors from around the world. A vivid eighteenth-century Neapolitan Nativity scene—embellished with a profuse array of miniature hand painted figures and silk-robed angels hover above.
  1. Cheery Chinatown – Hop on the subway, take a break from your shopping and head down for a different but sumptuous brunch of Dim Sum dumplings if you are in the mood. Mott Street offers these delicious treats, which come wheeled in on carts by anxious to please waitresses, smiling and solicitous.
